Icy Plunge for a $1 Million Cause!

It might be a mild winter, but it still takes a slightly crazy person to jump into icy cold 40 degree water on wind whipping 40 degree day in February!…

Polar Bear Plungers racing into the icy surf!

…It was all for a great cause! Thousands gathered at the beach in Seaside Heights on Saturday, February 25th to brave the cold, icy water for a great cause.  The annual Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights collected over $1 Million to support the Special Olympics of New Jersey.

Most Plungers raced into the surf for a short, icy dip of their feet and then sped back to the beach for the warmth of their towels and dry clothes.  Other, more committed plungers spend a few more moments in the surf, enjoying the crisp air and chilly water. Then there are the truly hardcore Plunge Crazies. They stroll into the ocean, anticipating the refreshing feeling of the icy surf. Some of them getting in a few backstrokes while gazing up into the sky as if it were a 90 degree day in the middle of July.

After the event, the fun continues at local bars and restaurants, where the participants discuss the day’s adventure and share stories that will become legendary amongst their friends for years to come.

Most Plungers were glad to have contributed to the $1 Million fundraising effort and are anticipating all of the warm, real beach days that are still to come at the Jersey Shore…

Sea Watch Beach – Manasquan Beach

I was fortunate enough today to spend a couple of hours at Sea Watch Beach on the North End in Manasquan. You’ll know you are there when you see the sign (pictured). Every Beach has its own charm and character Sea Watch is definitely all about sitting in relative quiet soaking up the suns rays or enjoying a dip in the ocean.

For those not familiar with the Beach or area there is $8 charge to get on the beach and season passes are also available. Parking is normally not too bad especially if you get there before 10:00AM. Restrooms and a small snack area accessible from the Beach (and thankfully clean). Several cool bars and restaurants are within a few blocks so you can always grab a drink and solid meal to eat on your way back home.

There’s a time and place for everything. When I’m in the mood for more I’ll head out to Point Pleasant Beach, where you can get the beach and boardwalk atmosphere. Perfect for when you want to retreat from the sun and partake in a few boardwalk games or grab a beer and bite to eat at a place like or Today was all about some rest and relaxation and that mission was accomplished at Sea Watch!

LMAO at the Jersey Shore!

This past Sunday we were able to attend the inaugural Craft Brewed Comedy show at Jack’s Goal Line Stand in Long Branch. It was an event put together and hosted by Long Branch resident and local comedian Craig Mahoney and featured 5 comedians hailing from NJ and NY and was co-sponsored by Beach Haus® Classic American Pilsner.

Jack’s Goal Line Stand has over 40 Craft Beers on tap, great food and a great mix of people. This however would be their first comedy show. Comedy shows can be tricky though. Sometimes you are begging for more and other times you are begging for your money back. Each of the 5 comedians had a different style. Corey Reppond

Craig, creator and host of Craft Brewed Comedy...a feature at the Jersey Shore

, originally from Tennessee but now living in NJ spent time roasting the host and some in the crowd. His bit about people from Connecticut was particularly memorable. Comedian Brett Druck fashioned much of his set around his guitar strumming a few repetitive chords while wedging in peculiar and often funny observations and imaginative personal experiences. A particular favorite line of mine dealt with the topic of women cougars. Natty Bumpercar told us about his trip to the mall so he could use the restroom. Adam Lucidi perhaps made the most hilarious personal observations regarding the decor of Jack’s Goal Line Stand and Ben Rosenfeld had you laughing with his Michael Meyers meets Vincent Price meets Norm MacDonald (authors opinion) set.

Overall there was something for everyone and host Craig Mahoney had plenty of his own material sprinkled in throughout the night to keep things moving. Craig, God Bless You! ;)

Another show is set for March. Check our www.craigmahoney.com for more detail.

“The Mound”, a 30 foot man-made mountain at the Jersey Shore

We’ve received about 40 inches of snow so far this year and we’re just about a month into winter.  All this snow has brought out droves of happy sledders and produced an equal number of aching backs.

The Jersey Shore isn’t known for it’s hilly terrain, but we make the best of most situations… With the massive amount of snow we received and no where to put it all, except into a giant pile, “The Mound” was created on Ocean Ave in Spring Lake. Not many people can say that they’ve been snow sledding within feet of the ocean…

Oktoberfest Season

The first Oktoberfest took place exactly 200 years ago as a commemoration of the marriage of Crown Prince of Bavaria Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The Official Celebration takes place in Munich but the largest Oktoberfest Celebration outside of Germany takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio.

You don’t have to travel to Munich or Cincinnati to experience Oktoberfest as there are many Oktoberfest celebrations at the Jersey Shore!

Beach Haus beer was featured at an Oktoberfest Celebration at Monmouth Park on Saturday, October 9th.

There was authentic Oktoberfest Music and lots of tasty German Food

Lastly there was plenty of tasty beer being poured including our own Beach Haus® Classic American Pilsner that has it’s German-American roots as well!

Beer, Brats and Bets at Momouth Park! Not a Bad Way to Celebrate Oktoberfest at the Jersey Shore!!

Live Original Music at The Saint, Asbury Park

East Coast Beer Co. recently co-hosted a beer tasting at The Saint in Asbury Park.
If Asbury Park, NJ is not known to you as destination for original music…it should be.

For the past 30 years (post Bruce Springsteen) Asbury Park has been one of a handful of spots in NJ that has been reliable in delivering the very best Original Local and National acts! I have enjoyed my time at The Saint (now enjoying its 15th year of operation) both as a musician (Slave of Id, Artists That Kill) and a music lover.

Last night was no exception. While the weather kept many of the regulars at home no amount of rain, wind or tornado warnings could keep The Quick & Easy Boys from Portland, Oregon away. This being their 3rd performance at The Saint in the past 2 years.

Before their set I was taken back with just how outwardly friendly the group, a trio accompanied by two artists that share the stage with the band and collaborate on an original canvas painting throughout the set were towards those in attendance. Sure, musicians tend to be natural extroverts but with only about two dozen in attendance even the most seasoned act might just go through the motions.
Michael Goetz (Drums & Vocals) paid the first visit to our Beach Haus® Classic American Pilsner sampling section. One as to be very careful when talking about beer, especially craft beer, with folks from Oregon which is considered to be the Craft Beer capital of America. I quickly broke the ice as I poured his sample stating that our beer, at least in part, should feel like a bit of home as we use Mt. Hood hops. He chuckled and drank his sample, giving the obligatory “it’s good” response. Soon his band-mate’s, Sean Badders (Bass & Vocals) and Jimmy Russell (Guitar & Vocals) and artists buddies were also taking their samples. Each one had something nice to say about the beer and they totally dug and respected the local offering.

The Quick & Easy Boys began their set around 10:20PM and really BLEW ME AWAY!! Despite being in front of a somewhat smaller audience you would have thought they were playing live at the Garden. While technically extremely talented musicians, their precision on their instruments was not only matched but surpassed by their soulfulness and passion. You could really tell that they enjoyed playing each and every one of their songs and there was bond between the band that was deeper than just respect as fellow musicians. The fact that the drummer chose Beach Haus as his beverage of choice for the set was all the more special for me.

Back in the day I would have hung out with these guys all night and pounded some beers. But their busy tour schedule and my need to get some sleep prevented this. I did not get to say goodbye to the guys personally (as I had left just before their set ended) but you can be sure I will be on the lookout for these guys and you should to. Their latest album Red Light Rabbit,

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

is available on iTunes.

Lastly, one has to appreciate and support places like The Saint. It is easy for any artists to get locked into one geography, but places around the country like The Saint are making sure folks like us can always catch an fresh new, or perhaps just unfamiliar act in a very casual setting.
