Coast the Coast ride to support the fight against Multiple Sclerosis

Conditions were ideal for the Beach Haus Bike Team’s 25 mile MS Coast the Coast Ride on Saturday.  The temperature was in the low 70’s with partly cloudy skys and a light breeze.  Our team of 12 riders met at the Boylan Gymnasium on the campus of Monmouth University to check-in with the race organizers around 9AM.   We grabbed some snacks and drinks to fuel up for the ride and headed to the starting line at 10AM.

There were a few short words of encouragement given by the major sponsors of the ride, the national anthem was sang, and we were officially on the course a few minutes after 10AM.

The ride took us 25 miles along the New Jersey coast, through the seaside towns and shore communities of Long Branch, Brielle, Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach, Avon, Belmar and Spring Lake.  We rode along the shoreline and through neighborhoods with impressive shore estates, victorian homes, bungalows and even beside the tent camp in Ocean Grove.

Since the weather was mild, the beach wasn’t very crowded.  The streets weren’t overwhelmed with cars and pedestrians, which made it perfect for bike riding.  The ride was just long enough for most of the team, especially since some of us tacked on a few extra miles by taking a wrong turn in the home stretch.  In the end, I think we all felt that doing a longer distance in the coming years would require some more serious training to prepare for anything over 25 miles.

We finished the ride at about 1pm and headed back to the Boylan Gymnasium at Monmouth University for some lunch provided by the organizers.

It was a great opportunity to raise some money for the fight against MS and to get a chance to ride along the Jersey Shore with old and new friends.  Our team raised over $2000 for this cause and we hope to beat it next year.  Thanks to all the Beach Haus Bike Team Members for your fund raising efforts: Briana Kenney, Michael Corbally, Cherie Dorsi, Chris McCallion, Karen McCallion, John Merklin, Beth Prol, Ed Prol, Kim Surowicz, Melanie Ciriaco and Rick Weyersberg.  If you’re interested in supporting our efforts in the fight against MS, you can still donate until June 30, 2010.

  1. Hey,
That wrong turn was sponsored by Beach Haus® Classic American Pilsner! 😉
